Privacy Policy
Effective September 18, 2026 · Last updated September 18, 2026
This policy explains what Nose collects, why, who it is shared with, how long it is kept, and how to get it deleted. It is written to be read, not to be survived.
The short version
This summary is here for convenience. The sections that follow are the binding ones.
- We collect the least we can: a phone number, a display name, your language settings, and the messages we have to carry in order to deliver them.
- A message is translated for one reason — to deliver it to the person you sent it to in the language they read.
- We do not sell or share personal information for money or for cross-context behavioural advertising, and we do not run ads.
- You can delete your account, and its message history, from inside the app at any time.
Who we are
Nose is operated by Nose Labs, Inc., 2261 Market Street, Suite 5150, San Francisco, CA 94114, USA. For the purposes of the UK and EU General Data Protection Regulation we are the data controller for the information described here.
Privacy questions and requests: privacy@nose.app.
What we collect
Information you give us
- Account details. The phone number you register with, a display name, and an optional profile photo.
- Language settings. The language you read and write in, and any per-contact overrides you set.
- Message content. The messages, voice notes, photos and captions you send, for as long as we need them to deliver and sync them (see Messages and translation).
- Glossary entries. On Pro accounts, the terms you ask us never to translate.
- Support correspondence. What you write to us, and what we write back.
Information we collect automatically
- Device and app data. Device model, iOS version, app version, language and region settings, and a generated device identifier used to keep you signed in.
- Diagnostics. Crash reports and performance traces, so we can fix what breaks.
- Product events. Aggregate counts of actions such as messages sent or a language changed. These are not tied to message content.
Information from others
- Subscription status from Apple. Purchases are made through your Apple account. Apple tells us whether a subscription is active and which plan it is. We never receive your card number or billing address.
- Contacts. We do not upload your address book. If you grant contacts access, matching happens on your device so you can see who is already on Nose.
Messages and translation
Messages are encrypted in transit using TLS and encrypted at rest on our servers. When you send a message, it is passed to a translation model in order to produce the version the recipient reads. Some language pairs are translated on your device; the rest are translated on servers we control.
Message content is used to deliver and translate your message and for nothing else. It is not used to build an advertising profile, and it is not sold. We do not use the content of your messages to train general-purpose translation models unless you have separately and explicitly opted in to a quality programme, which is off by default.
When you report a translation as wrong, the message you reported — the original and the translation — is sent to us so a human can look at the language pair. Reporting is always your choice.
How we use information
- To deliver, translate and sync your messages.
- To create and secure your account and keep you signed in.
- To provide the features of the plan you are on.
- To diagnose crashes, fix bugs and improve performance.
- To answer support requests.
- To detect and prevent abuse, spam, fraud and activity that breaks our Terms of Service.
- To comply with the law and to enforce our agreements.
If you are in the EEA or the UK, our legal bases are: performance of our contract with you (delivering the service), legitimate interests (security, abuse prevention, product improvement), consent (where we ask for it, such as optional diagnostics), and legal obligation.
What we never do
- We do not sell personal information.
- We do not share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising.
- We do not show advertising in Nose.
- We do not read your messages for any purpose other than delivering and translating them, or responding to a report you chose to send.
Who we share with
We share personal information only with service providers who process it on our instructions, under contract, for the purposes above:
- Cloud hosting and storage — to run the service.
- Machine translation providers — to produce the translated text for language pairs not handled on device.
- Crash and performance reporting — to find and fix defects.
- Apple — for subscription billing and receipt validation.
- Customer support tooling — to answer your messages to us.
We may also disclose information if required by valid legal process, to protect the rights and safety of users or the public, or in connection with a merger, acquisition or sale of assets — in which case we will give notice before your information becomes subject to a different policy.
How long we keep it
- Message content. Kept while it is in your history so it can sync across your devices. Deleting a conversation removes it from our servers within 30 days. Undelivered messages are discarded after 30 days.
- Account details. Kept for as long as your account exists.
- Diagnostics and product events. Kept for up to 13 months, then deleted or aggregated beyond recovery.
- Support correspondence. Kept for up to 24 months.
- Records we must keep by law — such as tax records relating to a subscription — are kept for the period the law requires.
Deleting your account
You can delete your Nose account and its contents from inside the app: Settings → Account → Delete account. Deletion removes your profile, your language settings, your glossary and your message history from our systems. It completes within 30 days, except for backups, which are overwritten on a rolling 90-day cycle, and records we are legally required to retain.
Messages you already sent to another person remain on that person’s device and in their copy of the conversation, in the same way a text message does.
If you cannot reach the app, email privacy@nose.app from the address or phone number on the account and we will complete the deletion for you.
Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Know what personal information we hold and get a copy of it.
- Correct information that is wrong.
- Delete your information.
- Receive your information in a portable format.
- Object to or restrict certain processing.
- Withdraw consent you previously gave.
- Not be discriminated against for exercising any of these.
To exercise any of them, email privacy@nose.app. We respond within 30 days, or within 45 days where the law allows an extension and we tell you why. We will verify your request against the account it concerns before acting on it.
You can also control permissions on your device: notifications, contacts, microphone and photos can each be withdrawn in iPhone Settings at any time.
Region-specific rights
California
In the last 12 months we have collected the following categories of personal information: identifiers (phone number, device identifier), customer records (display name), commercial information (subscription status), internet or network activity (app usage events), and the content of communications for the purpose of delivering them. We disclose these to the service providers listed above for business purposes only.
We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, including that of anyone under 16. You have the right to know, delete, correct, and to limit the use of sensitive personal information — we do not use sensitive personal information for any purpose beyond providing the service. You may use an authorised agent; we will ask for proof of authorisation.
EEA and United Kingdom
In addition to the rights above, you may lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. In the UK this is the Information Commissioner’s Office. We would rather you came to us first — privacy@nose.app — but you do not have to.
International transfers
We are based in the United States and our service providers operate in several countries, so your information may be processed outside the country you live in. Where we transfer personal information out of the EEA or the UK we rely on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses, and the UK Addendum where it applies, together with technical measures including encryption in transit and at rest.
Security
We encrypt data in transit with TLS and at rest, restrict internal access to personal information to staff who need it for their work, log that access, and require multi-factor authentication on our infrastructure. No service can promise perfect security, and we will not pretend otherwise. If a breach affects you, we will notify you and the relevant regulators within the timeframes the law sets.
Children
Nose is not intended for children under 13, and under 16 in the EEA and the UK. We do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, email privacy@nose.app and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We update this policy when the product changes or the law does. The effective date at the top always reflects the current version. If a change materially affects how we handle your information, we will tell you in the app or by a message to your registered contact details before it takes effect.
